Voice now lives in Box. And Box now lives on your Mac.

Voice now lives in Box. And Box now lives on your Mac.

In June we wrote that we were building two apps: Box and Voice. Box for all your messages in one place, Voice so you could talk instead of type. Today those two have become one. Voice is no longer a product of its own. It lives inside Box.

Why one app instead of two

The longer we worked on Voice, the more often we noticed the same thing. What you say out loud is almost always a reply. To an email, to a WhatsApp, to a customer who is waiting. And those messages already sit in Box. Box knows your conversations, your contacts and the tone you write in. A separate app that knew none of that felt wrong.

So we made the choice we also ask of our clients: fewer apps, not more. One Box that listens, reads and writes.

An island at the top of your screen

The new home of Voice is the Box app for Mac. At the top of your screen, around the camera, sits a small black pill. If you have an iPhone, you know the idea of the Dynamic Island. For us it is the place where Box lives while you work.

Most of the time you barely see it. Move your mouse over it and it opens: your next meeting from your calendar, the messages you still need to answer, your chats and your mail. You do not have to open Box to see what is waiting for you. It is simply there, quietly, at the top.

You talk, Box writes, right where your cursor is

This is the part that used to be called Voice. You hold one key and talk. When you let go, the text is there. Not in a separate window, but exactly where your cursor is: in an email, in a chat, in a document, in a form on a website.

And it is not a raw transcript. Box takes out the "uhms", puts the commas in the right place and turns it into a sentence you could have typed yourself. Short when it is a message, complete when it is an email.

Talking is faster than typing. It just finally had to be ready to send, too.

Box AI that helps with your Mac

With another key you do not talk to type, you talk to ask. Box AI then does the work on your Mac. A few things we do with it ourselves, every day:

  • Open a website or a new tab, without searching for it.
  • Find a file when you only roughly remember what it was called.
  • Convert an image to PNG, or make it smaller before you send it.
  • Write a message and send it to someone in your Box.
  • Check what is on your calendar today, or plan a follow-up.

Whenever something gets sent or removed, Box asks first. Looking, searching and opening happen right away. We drew that line on purpose: Box should save you time, but never do something you have not seen.

Honestly: where we stand

The Mac app is in beta. That means we use it ourselves every day, and we still improve it every day. You cannot download it publicly yet. There is no download button, and we will only add one when it is as reliable as the rest of Box.

Box itself, with your mail and chats in one place, is at box.nivoraworks.com. That is also where the Mac app will appear first, as soon as it is ready. If you already use Box, you will hear it first.

In June we wrote that we did not want to add apps to your day, but take a few away. Putting Voice inside Box is the most literal example of that. One app fewer. And a Box that finally listens too.
